Cartmel races

DULL skies and drizzle did not deter thousands of people from visiting Cartmel races at the weekend.

Cartmel’s bank holiday races got off to a wet start on Saturday, as rain poured during the evening meeting.

Spectators had their raincoats at the ready, determined not to let wet weather dampen their spirits.

Ladies and gents dressed to the nines for a night at the races took shelter under brollies as the racing got under way.

There were seven races during Saturday’s evening meeting, with entries from South Cumbrian trainer James Moffatt.

Owner of the racecourse, Lord Cavendish, said: “There are seven races tonight (Saturday), which is to become the norm.

“Given the weather, I am very impressed by the loyalty of our customers who turn out rain or shine.

“It is very encouraging that we are still attracting such a big crowd, it makes for good sport.

“We also expect a very good turnout on Monday.

“We will repair the course and having it looking as good as new in time for the bank holiday.”

The last race was sponsored by family and friends of late Millom woman Andrea Robinson. The Andrea Robinson Celebration Handicap Hurdle Race was dedicated to the memory of Mrs Robinson, 41 who died in February following a fall.

A tribute to Mrs Robinson, published in Saturday’s racecard, said: “Cartmel Race Day was always marked early on Andrea’s calendar. She organised a bus from Millom for all her family and friends – it was one of the highlights of her year, a big get together at the races.”

Cartmel continues today. The first race starts at 2.10pm and the last race is at 5.40pm.

The mid-week meeting is on Wednesday.

Further fixtures will be held on Thursday, July 15, Thursday, August 26, Saturday, August 28 and Monday, August 30.
