Cumbria rugby union staff to help sick kids

Rugby Football Union staff and friends from Cumbria will be out and about on the county’s roads this weekend raising money for The Sick Children’s Trust.
The fundraising project will include a bike ride which takes in all of the 23 clubs in the county, starting at Hawcoat Park in the south west on Friday and finishing in Keswick on Sunday.
Cumbria rugby development officer Liam Nicholls, the community rugby coaching team of Trevor Richardson, Kieran Marshall, Graham Kidd, Martin Grealish, Russell Gainford, Shelley Atkinson, Garry Holmes and RFU guests from the north east, Alan Moses and Philip Harvey, will be in the saddle, taking on a cameo challenge at each venue.
The Trust was chosen after Harry Nicholls, Liam’s son, was born in January with a rare illness that resulted in his family needing to spend time in accommodation at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
The logistics of that stay were a burden the Nicholls family did not need at such an anxious time which meant that the support of The Sick Childrens Trust, who offered a ‘Home from Home’ in the form of Crawford House on the hospital site, was especially welcome.
“Reading the cards of thanks whilst in the accommodation really hit home and sparked myself and my friends into a fundraising effort to support other families in the running of these fantastic facilities,” said Liam: “This will involve cycling around every RU club in Cumbria and covering some 265 miles over the 3 days.”
The trip will take in Hawcoat Park, Furness, Millom, Greengarth, Egremont, St Benedicts, Whitehaven, Moresby, Workington, Cockermouth, Netherhall, Aspatria, Silloth, Wigton, Carlisle, Creighton, Penrith, Upper Eden, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick clubs.
