Dalton Carnival

THE ancient capital of Furness was bathed in glorious sunshine for Dalton Carnival.

Thousands of people lined Dalton’s Market Street to watch the carnival parade through the town.

As the parade continued up Market Street, some of the dancers broke into spontaneous dance during a brief pause.

The new carnival queen, Amanda Cowling, 13, proudly sporting her tiara, looked to be enjoying her moment in the limelight, alongside ladies in waiting, Molly Quinn and Laura Pegg, both 12.

After the parade made its way up Skelgate and on to the home stretch on Chapel Street, the masses flocked on to Dowdales playing field.

Youngsters enjoyed donkey rides in the shade from the baking heat, while ice cream vendors did a roaring trade.

Among the thousands of people gathered on the playing field, the dancers hurried around in their glitzy costumes ahead of the afternoon’s big event.

Dalton mayor, councillor Martin McLeavy, said it was the best Dalton carnival he had ever been to.

He said: “It was an excellent day, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The sun shines on Dalton again.

“It was well co-ordinated, well organised and the attendance was outstanding.

“It was the best one I’ve been to and a lot of the comments from people were good.

“A lot of people commented that Dalton carnival seems to be erring towards the best carnival.

“There didn’t seem to be any trouble.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a good fun family day.”
